NC begins two-day CWC meet to review performance, internal challenges
Nasir Aslam Wani says MP Ruhullah not invited, final decisions expected after Day-2
Srinagar: The National Conference on Thursday began a two-day Central Working Committee meeting in Srinagar, aimed at reviewing public anger, assessing governance delivery and discussing internal party matters. The meeting was chaired by Dr Farooq Abdullah with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also in attendance, signalling the importance of the gathering at a time when the party is facing rising criticism from its own voter base.
Legislators and senior leaders were asked to present honest ground feedback. A senior MLA said they were specifically asked why people are unhappy, where the government is lagging and what steps are needed to reconnect with the public. The recent Budgam bypoll defeat, which came as a setback, was also discussed in detail as leaders tried to understand where and why NC lost ground.
The introspection comes almost a year after the National Conference returned to power with a clear majority in the Assembly elections. With high expectations surrounding its comeback, the party is now trying to understand whether delivery has matched promises and where course correction is required.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, senior NC leader and advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani said the discussions are ongoing and no conclusion has been reached yet. He emphasised that this is a two-day process and clarity will come only after the final sitting on Friday.
When asked whether MP Aga Syed Ruhullah had been invited, Wani confirmed that he had not been called for the meeting. The absence reflects the recent friction between Ruhullah and the party leadership.
Notably, Ruhullah has publicly criticised NC for failing to fulfil commitments made during the 2024 campaign and has warned that he may join student protests after December 20, the day winter session of Parliament ends, if the recruitment issue remains unresolved.
Earlier, NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq said that all major political, organisational and strategic matters would be taken up during the session, suggesting that the party is preparing for serious internal review.
The CWC will reconvene tomorrow, and party workers and observers will be watching closely to see if the leadership announces any structural changes or takes a stand on Ruhullah’s growing dissent. The next 24 hours may offer clearer answers on how NC plans to move forward.
