Locals express hope, relief

Pulwama: After decades of living in isolation and struggling without even the most basic transport facilities, residents of Banjaran Sangervani in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district have finally received long-awaited relief as their area has been brought under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).
A new road project, sanctioned at an estimated cost of 2 crore, is expected to be completed within the next one year, officials said.
For the people of this remote habitation, the sanctioned road is more than just an infrastructure project—it is the fulfilment of a demand they have raised for generations.
“We have lived like this for years… today we finally see hope,” say villagers
Locals said that the absence of road connectivity had pushed them into a life of hardship, especially during medical emergencies, winter months, and for students who often walked long distances to reach school.
“Even in 2025, we were living without a road. It felt like we were cut off from the rest of the world,” said Abdul Gani, a local resident. “This sanction has brought real happiness to our village. We just hope the work starts soon and finishes on time.”
Women in the area, who bear much of the burden of household responsibilities, said the road will significantly ease their daily struggles.
“Carrying essentials, taking children to school, or reaching the hospital during emergencies has always been a nightmare,” said Rubeena Akhtar. “With this road, our lives will change for the better.”
Students also shared their excitement, hoping the new connectivity will help them pursue education without daily physical stress.
“We walk several kilometres every day. In rains or snow, it becomes extremely difficult,” said Class 10 student Zubair Ahmad. “A proper road means safer travel and more time for studies.”
Officials from the PMGSY department confirmed that the sanctioned road—stretching from the main village link to Banjaran Sangervani—will be taken up for construction in the coming weeks.
“The project has been approved at a cost of Rs 2 crore and is targeted for completion within one year, provided the weather permits,” an official said. “This road will benefit dozens of households and significantly improve accessibility.”
Residents urged the administration and the executing agency to ensure speedy execution and strict monitoring.
