Locals raise questions, demand alternative land for dumping site

Pulwama: Tension has erupted in Lalagam area of Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district after the Rural Development Department (RDD) under Block Dadsara identified a spot along the Tral-Srinagar road for establishing a dumping site.
The decision has triggered widespread resentment among the local residents, who have termed the move “unacceptable” and “a threat to the environment and public health.”
According to locals, the proposed site is located close to residential houses and agricultural land, raising fears of pollution, foul smell, and contamination of water sources.
“We are shocked to learn that authorities have chosen this place for a dumping site when there are open and isolated spaces available elsewhere,” said Ghulam Nabi Dar, a resident of Lalagam. “This area is surrounded by homes, and such a site would make our lives miserable.”
Another local, Abdul Rashid Khan, expressed concern about the potential impact on the region’s cleanliness and tourism. “Tral is known for its scenic beauty, and choosing a roadside area as a dumping ground is both visually and environmentally damaging,” he said. “The government must reconsider this ill-planned decision.”
Locals have urged the administration to cancel the selection of the site immediately and identify a more appropriate area far from residential zones.
They have also appealed to the Deputy Commissioner Pulwama to intervene in the matter to prevent any further escalation of tensions.
