Long-pending demand of locals fulfilled, say residents

Pahalgam: In a major relief for residents of Sallar and adjoining area in Pahalgam hamlet of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, the Power Development Department (PDD) has upgraded the 6.3 MVA transformer at the Receiving Station Sallar to a 10 MVA unit. The move, aimed at strengthening the local power infrastructure, is expected to ensure a more stable and scheduled electricity supply—something the locals had been demanding for years.
Officials from the department said the upgradation was crucial to meet the increasing electricity demand, particularly with the onset of winter when load consumption peaks. “The new 10 MVA transformer will significantly reduce unscheduled power cuts and voltage fluctuations. Our priority is to provide uninterrupted power to consumers during the winter months,” said a PDD official.
Residents of Sallar expressed immense satisfaction over the development, terming it a long-overdue step. “We have been pleading with authorities for years to upgrade the transformer. Frequent power cuts and low voltage had made life difficult, especially for students and small businesses,” said Mohammad Yousuf, a local shopkeeper.
Another resident, Abdul Rashid, said, “This is something we had been waiting for a long time. The upgradation has given us new hope that our electricity woes will finally end. We are thankful to the concerned department for responding to our demand.”
Locals also hoped that the department would continue to monitor and improve the infrastructure to avoid overloading issues during peak seasons. “We only request the authorities to ensure timely maintenance so that we don’t face the same problems again,” added Farida Begum, a homemaker.
Officials further mentioned that the department is simultaneously working to strengthen transmission and distribution networks in rural areas of Pahalgam to ensure equitable and reliable power supply.
With this upgradation, the Sallar Receiving Station is now better equipped to handle the increasing demand, marking a significant step forward in improving the power scenario across the Pahalgam region.
