Illegal mining continues in Pulwama, allege residents
Demand strict action against culprits as water bodies suffer damage
Pulwama: Illegal extraction of sand, gravel and boulders continues unabated in several areas of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, prompting fresh concern among locals who say that the unchecked mining activity has caused serious damage to water bodies and river embankments in the region.
Locals from Litter, Nikloora, Lassipora and adjoining belts said that hat despite repeated pleas, the practice of illegal mining has not stopped. They alleged that not only unauthorized miners, but even those contractors who have formal permission from the authorities are not adhering to the norms and environmental guidelines.
“Even those who have official contracts are violating conditions. They are extracting material beyond the permissible limits and deepening the riverbed which destroys the natural flow of water,” said a local resident from Litter, adding that severe degradation of water bodies is already visible.
Another resident from Nikloora said that if immediate intervention is not taken, water bodies in the area will “turn into massive pits and canals” because of the excessive digging.
“These water sources are lifelines for irrigation. Once damaged, it will take years to restore their original state,” he said.
Residents have urged the district administration, Geology and Mining department, and police authorities to intensify monitoring and ensure that field-level checks are carried out regularly.
Meanwhile, police in Pulwama said that a major action has been taken against illegal mining activities.
A police spokesman said that two JCBs, one loader and two tractors involved in unlawful extraction of minerals from Rambiara Nala near Nikloora Litter have been seized. A case, FIR No. 92/2025, has been registered at Police Station Litter under relevant sections of law and further investigation has been initiated.
Police further said that efforts to curb the menace will continue with more strict enforcement measures in coming days.
“Police is committed to take strong action against illegal mining across Jammu & Kashmir and safeguard natural resources,” police official added.
Locals however stressed that action should not be limited to one or two incidents and demanded sustained monitoring on ground so that the fragile environment and water systems are protected.
