Pulwama residents demand urgent repair of Pahoo–Checkpora Road
Pulwama: The main road passing through Hasanwani village in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district has fallen into severe disrepair, causing immense hardship to commuters and prompting locals to urge the government to take immediate action.
Residents said the Pahoo–Checkpora road which serves as a vital link connecting several villages — including Hasanwani, Checkpora, and Pahoo — to the district headquarters Pulwama, has been neglected for years. They said the road surface is riddled with deep potholes and broken stretches, making vehicular movement both difficult and unsafe.
“Traveling on this road has become a nightmare. The condition worsens whenever it rains — the potholes fill with muddy water, and it becomes almost impossible for pedestrians and vehicles to pass safely,” said Mohammad Yousuf, a local resident.
Another villager, Abdul Rashid, said that the damaged road has also affected transport services and local businesses. “Public transport operators avoid this route due to the poor condition of the road. Even ambulances and school buses face difficulties, which is a serious concern,” he added.
Locals alleged that despite repeated representations to the concerned authorities, no substantial repair work has been carried out. Temporary patchwork, they said, wears off within weeks, leaving the road in the same dilapidated condition.
“The road has not seen proper macadamization for nearly a decade,” said Ghulam Hassan, another resident. “We appeal to the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department and the district administration to take immediate steps for its repair before winter sets in.”
Officials from the R&B Department said the road will be repaired very soon. “We are aware of the problem and necessary action will be taken soon,” an official assured.
