World Trauma Day : SKIMS reaffirms its expanding role beyond healthcare services
Srinagar: The Department of Neurosurgery, SKIMS, in collaboration with the Department of Emergency Medicine, organized a pioneering one-day conference to mark World Trauma Day on the theme “Every Second Counts.”
The event aimed to raise awareness about the increasing global trauma burden, with special focus on the rising incidence of trauma in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Founder Director of SKIMS, Dr. A.K. Nagpal, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, expressed pride in the recognition SKIMS continues to receive nationally and internationally.
He remarked that SKIMS has been acknowledged as one of the premier institutions in the country and serves as a model of excellence in healthcare delivery that has been replicated globally.
Dr. Nagpal lauded the recent initiatives taken under the leadership of Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie and recognized the need to revive the larger role of SKIMS as an academic, research, and healthcare powerhouse. Referring to trauma management, he emphasized the importance of developing trauma care facilities at peripheral levels and establishing well-equipped Trauma Care Centres in tertiary care hospitals.
Director SKIMS, Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, emphasized that SKIMS has a much broader role beyond patient care — encompassing teaching, training, and research. He urged faculty members to continually upgrade their knowledge and skills in line with the institute’s objectives.
Prof. Ashraf highlighted that the recent upgradation and expansion of emergency services at SKIMS was a significant step toward strengthening emergency and trauma care. He further stated that despite limited infrastructure and manpower, judicious utilization of available resources is key to efficient trauma management. SKIMS, he said, is in the process of formulating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to streamline trauma care and address the growing trauma burden effectively.
Dean Medical Faculty SKIMS, Prof. G.M. Gulzar, lauded the pivotal role SKIMS continues to play in emergency medical services. He paid tribute to Dr. A.K. Nagpal for laying a strong foundation for the institute, which has enabled its consistent growth and excellence.
Organising Chairman, Prof. Nayil Khursheed Malik, welcomed the dignitaries and participants, expressing gratitude to Dr. A.K. Nagpal for his visionary leadership and to Director SKIMS, Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, for his efforts in reshaping and modernizing SKIMS. He also extended a warm welcome to Prof. Dhaval Shukla, Director, Trauma Centre Bangalore, a globally recognized expert in trauma care, whose presence enriched the conference by sharing invaluable insights with students and participants.
The conference featured multiple scientific sessions where experts deliberated on the current trauma landscape, management strategies, and the critical role SKIMS plays in providing trauma-related healthcare services in the region.
Incharge, Emergency Medicine, Dr. Umar Hafiz, concluded the inaugural ceremony with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all guests, dignitaries, and participants for their presence and contributions in making the event a success.
