Locals allege repeated attacks, demand swift action from authorities

Shopian: Panic has gripped the Chitragam area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district after a leopard attacked a minor boy on Monday evening, with locals alleging that this was not the first such incident in the area.
The victim, identified as Rehan Suhail of Kashwa locality in Chitragam, was riding his bicycle around 7 p.m. when the wild animal pounced on him.
Alert villagers rushed to his aid and managed to drive the leopard away, rescuing the boy from further harm.
“He was suddenly attacked, and it was a terrifying moment. We rushed immediately, making noise and throwing stones to scare the animal off. Thankfully, the boy was pulled to safety,” said a local resident who was part of the rescue.
Locals said that this incident has triggered fresh fear among residents, particularly parents of young children. “In the past one year alone, there have been at least five attacks in the area, mostly targeting children. Yet the authorities have failed to capture the leopard or provide us with any sense of security,” said Mushtaq Ahmad, another resident.
Villagers alleged that despite repeated appeals, the wildlife department has not taken effective steps. “We feel unsafe even in daylight hours. Children are scared to step outside, and parents remain worried every time they go out to play or to school,” said Abdul Rashid, a local elder.
They said this is peak apple season and they have to visit their orchards but due to presence of leopard in the area, they are feeling insecure in the area.
The residents have now sought immediate intervention from Deputy Commissioner Shopian and the Wildlife Department, urging them to intensify efforts to capture the wild animal before another tragedy occurs.
“The leopard has become a constant threat here. Authorities must wake up before something irreversible happens,” the locals added.
