Srinagar: In one of the biggest crackdowns in recent years, the Food Safety Department has seized nearly 12,000 kilograms of rotten meat from different parts of Srinagar and adjoining areas. Officials confirmed that the seized consignments have been sent for laboratory testing and results of samples will be shared with the public soon.

Speaking exclusively to ‘Kashmir Vision’, a senior official said, “This is a massive haul. We cannot allow such a quantity of unfit meat to reach the market. Food samples are undergoing multiple stages of testing, and the final reports will be shared with the public soon.”

Another officer added, “Our teams are conducting surprise checks across the Valley. Sellers found guilty of endangering public health will face heavy fines and even jail time as per the law.”

The seizure comes against the backdrop of growing public anger over reports of rotten and substandard meat being sold in Kashmir. The issue has triggered health concerns and led to a surge in demand for vegetarian food options, with many families avoiding meat altogether until safety is ensured.

The Food Safety Department has intensified its operations, carrying out raids in slaughterhouses, cold storages, and retail markets. Officials said the aim is to break the nexus of those compromising public health for profit.

“The health of our people is our top priority. We appeal to citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to food adulteration,” the department said.
