Police arrests four drug peddlers in south Kashmir, recovers contraband substances
Launches bhang destruction drive in Handwara
Srinagar: Police arrested four drug peddlers in Anantnag, Kulgam and Awantipora and recovered contraband substance from their possession, a police spokesman said Monday.
He said that in Anantnag, a police team at a checkpoint established at Hangalgund, Kokernag apprehended a drug peddler identified as Abid Husain Mir, son of Bashir Ahmad Mir, resident of Narupora.
During search, 10 kilograms and 300 grams of Bhang Patri and Bhang seeds was recovered from his possession and was subsequently arrested. Accordingly, a case vide FIR No. 80/2025 under relevant sections of law have been registered and investigation has been initiated.
Meanwhile in Kulgam, a police party at a checkpoint established at Alstop Bypass near Lalipora crossing, intercepted a suspicious person. He has been identified as Salman Sadiq Dar son of Mohammad Sadiq Dar resident of Nai Basti Anantnag. During search, officers were able to recover 1.4 kgs of cannabis leaves and 6.5 grams of charas like contraband substance from his possession. He was subsequently arrested and a case vide FIR No. 152/2025 under relevant sections of law has been registered.
Moreover, in Awantipora, a police team at a checkpoint established at Gallander Pampore, intercepted a vehicle (load carrier) bearing registration number K03B-2127 with two persons on board. They have been identified as Javed Ahmed Sheikh resident of Sangam and Muzafar Ahmad Shalla resident of Bijbihara. During search, officers were able to recover 1.265Kg of Charas like substance from their possession. They have been arrested and a case vide FIR No. 80/2025 under relevant sections of law has been registered.
Meanwhile, police recovered huge quantity of contraband substance from a residential house in Shangran Anantnag besides, arrested the accused person involved in the crime.
Acting on a credible input regarding illegal narcotics activity, a police team conducted a search operation in village Shangran under the close supervision of senior officers. During the operation, the team searched the residential house of one Ghulam Nabi Dar, son of Abdul Salam Dar, resident of Shangran, and recovered 16 kilograms of poppy straw concealed in three plastic buckets. The accused person involved in the crime has been arrested and the contraband was seized and sealed on the spot in presence of the Executive Magistrate.
Accordingly, a case FIR No. 56/2025 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Dooru and further investigation is underway.
Police also conducted a bhang (cannabis) destruction drive at Unisoo area of Handwara in north Kashmir, the spokesman added.
During the drive, a large stretch of illegally cultivated bhang was identified and destroyed on the spot. The operation witnessed active participation from the Excise Department, Numberdars, and local citizens who extended their full cooperation to the police in this collective effort against drug abuse and its harmful impact on society.
The drive was carried out under the supervision of senior officers of Police. Local community members were also sensitized about the ill effects of drug addiction and the legal consequences of cultivating narcotic plants, the spokesman added.
