Joint pain is often seen as a normal part of aging. Many people in India simply “adjust” to it, hoping it will go away with home remedies or rest. But sometimes, your joints are trying to tell you something more serious.

When pain, stiffness, or swelling refuse to settle with lifestyle modifications, physiotherapy, splinting and medication, it signifies that your joint is severely damaged, and that joint replacement might be the remedy.

In India, the incidence of joint problems are rising sharply, especially amongst those over 50. According to data provided by the Indian Society of Hip and Knee Surgeons, nearly 1.2 lakh knee replacement surgeries are performed in India every year, and the estimates are of the numbers growing by 15% year on year. Increased life expectancy, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and injuries are major contributors.

Everyday Movements Become a Struggle

One of the earliest signs is difficulty with daily activities. If climbing stairs, getting out of a chair, or walking a few steps feels painful and exhausting, it’s time to take notice. Some people also feel “locking” or “giving way” in the knee or hip, making simple movements risky and unpredictable. Ignoring these signs can lead to further joint damage and weaker muscles over time.

Occasional joint pain after a long day is common. But if pain persists even when you’re resting, sleeping, or taking medicines regularly, it’s a warning sign. Pain that wakes you up at night or stops you from walking short distances is not something to ignore.

Stiffness and Swelling That Stay

Morning stiffness that lasts more than half an hour, or swelling that doesn’t go down with rest, ice and medication, could be due to advanced joint damage. In conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, the smooth cartilage covering the joints wears away, causing bones to rub together. This leads to constant swelling, deformity, and sometimes a change in the way you walk.

Joint replacement helps by removing the damaged joint surfaces and replacing them with artificial implants, giving back smooth movement and reducing friction inside the joint.

Joint problems don’t just hurt physically; they impact your entire life. When you start avoiding social gatherings, family trips, or even household chores because of fear of pain, your quality of life takes a hit. Joint replacement surgery today offers quick recovery times, with many patients able to walk with support within 1-2 days after surgery.

Getting the Right Advice Early

Many people believe joint replacement should only be the last option in treatment. But waiting too long can make the surgery harder and the recovery slower. Early consultation with an experienced orthopaedic specialist can open up more treatment options, including minimally invasive partial joint replacement surgery, or corrective osteotomies, which require shorter hospital stay and help preserve undamaged joints, with faster healing.

Awareness is growing in India, but there’s still hesitation in many towns and smaller cities. It’s important to know that with proper care and expert hands, joint replacement today is highly safe and successful, helping countless people return to active, pain-free lives
