Almost all households have kids and as the summer vacations have been announced and the day time temperature has risen alarmingly, parents have developed a habit of letting kids stay indoors.

This habit of not allowing the children outside their homes is letting them avoid outdoor games and activities and as a result the kids have got into the habit of sticking to the phones, games and the world of internet.

Sports as we all know are very important for children during their early years of life. Playing sports fosters teamwork, discipline, and perseverance while also improving cognitive abilities and emotional resilience.

However, with rapid technological advancements, particularly the rise of high-speed internet the younger generation has shifted from outdoor physical games to virtual gaming during the vacations and the leisure time they have even during school going days.

While video games were initially designed for entertainment and recreational purposes, their excessive and uncontrolled use has led to a growing dependence on them.

Today, many young individuals are deeply immersed in internet gaming, often prioritizing it over real-world activities, including academics, social interactions, and even basic self-care. This excessive indulgence in virtual gaming has led to the emergence of Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), a condition that has become a global concern.

Internet Gaming Disorder is a behavioural addiction characterized by compulsive gaming habits that impair an individual’s daily life. A person suffering from IGD loses control over gaming, prioritizing it over essential activities such as education, work, and social interactions.

While it’s understandable to want children to limit their internet and gaming use during vacations, completely avoiding these activities might not be realistic or necessary.

Instead, parents can consider setting boundaries and encouraging a balance between screen time and other activities. The children can be encouraged to engage in outdoor activities, sports, or creative pursuits that promote physical and mental well-being. These activities can be planned during that period of the day when the temperature is not that high. Mornings and evenings can be such periods of activity.

Vacations should also let the children know about fostering relationships and knowing your extended family. The children can be supported in spending time with friends and family, fostering social skills and relationships.

Since the world of internet cannot be almost blocked altogether, children need to be introduced to such educational apps, online resources, or games that can provide learning experiences and cognitive development.

The children are always in pursuit of creative expression and the vacations period can be one such phase where children can be exposed to art, music, writing, or other creative outlets. This will surely help them to express themselves in a much better way not only in their homes and family, but in the schools as well.
