Tukroo Shopian residents demand widening of vital road to ease traffic woes
Shopian: The residents of Tukroo and adjoining villages in south Kashmir’s Shopian district have raised strong concerns over the poor condition of a crucial road in their area and are urging the authorities to widen it without any further delay.
The road connects Tukroo to Poshpora, Nazneenpora, Adoora, and eventually the Fruit Mandi Shopian. Locals said it serves as a lifeline for thousands of people, particularly farmers, but its narrow width has made it a daily struggle for commuters.
“The road remains choked throughout the day due to high traffic volume. It’s so narrow that even two small vehicles can barely pass at the same time,” said Gulzar Ahmad, a resident of Tukroo.
“During emergencies or the harvesting season, it becomes a nightmare. A short journey of a few kilometres sometimes takes hours,” the resident said.
Echoing similar concerns, Mudasir Ahmad, another resident, said the road plays a pivotal role for fruit growers across at least three major villages.
“This route is the main artery for transporting apple and other produce to the Fruit Mandi Shopian. Unfortunately, during peak harvest season, we face massive delays and losses due to traffic congestion,” he said.
Despite repeated pleas and representations to the authorities, locals allege that their demands have fallen on deaf ears.
“We have approached the concerned departments several times, but there has been no visible action on ground,” said another local.
The residents are now appealing to the MLA Shopian and Deputy Commissioner Shopian to intervene immediately and ensure the widening of the road to ease the hardship of thousands of daily commuters and support the local agricultural economy.
