Pulwama: The Government Middle School in Zahid Bagh village of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district is grappling with severe infrastructural deficiencies, casting a shadow over the educational aspirations of dozens of students enrolled there.
Housed in a modest three-room building, the school struggles to accommodate more than 50 students, with each room often overcrowded.
The lack of adequate space not only affects the quality of education but also poses serious challenges for maintaining a conducive learning environment.
Local residents and parents have expressed concern over the condition of the school. “Our children are packed into tiny rooms with barely any space to sit or move. There is no ground for recreation, no library, no computer lab, and even basic sanitation is lacking,” said a parent from the village.
Teachers, too, find it difficult to manage multiple classes simultaneously due to the space crunch. “With limited rooms, we are forced to club different classes together, which hampers focused teaching and learning,” a teacher at the school remarked on condition of anonymity.
Farooq Ahmad, a local resident said that students belonging to financially weak families are studying but they are facing problems in absence of facilities.
“Education isn’t just about textbooks. Physical activity and co-curricular engagement are crucial for a child’s overall growth,” he said
Villagers have repeatedly appealed to the authorities to upgrade the school infrastructure, but their pleas have gone unheard so far. “We urge the government to look into this matter seriously. Our children deserve better,” said another local.
We have met the concerned CEOs, other officials along with several political leaders several times but to no avail who assured about postive development in this regard but on ground situation hasn’t changed yet.
They have once again sought the attention of Education Minister Sakina Itoo, concerned MLA and Deputy commissioner Pulwama in this regard.
