A perfect legislature

In democratic societies, the legislative assembly stands as the highest temple of discourse, debate, and decision-making. It is the place where representatives of the people deliberate on matters of public interest and shape policies that determine the future of generations.

However, when this sacred space of dialogue descends into chaos—marked by shouting matches, blame games, and unruly behaviour—it fails in its fundamental duty. Sadly, such has become the unfortunate reality in many instances in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.

The floor of the assembly must not resemble a wrestling ring, where egos clash and mudslinging dominates. It should not be reduced to a stage for “Gaali-Glooch” or blame game politics that stifle meaningful dialogue.

Instead, it must be a battlefield of innovative ideas—a space where legislators compete not in rhetoric, but in vision, policy depth, and commitment to the welfare of the people.

What Should Be Discussed?

The priorities of our lawmakers must align with the aspirations of the people, especially the youth who are the real stakeholders of tomorrow. The discussions in the assembly should revolve around:

  • GDP Growth Strategies: Legislators should focus on practical measures to stimulate the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Jammu and Kashmir. This includes promoting private investment, improving ease of doing business, and diversifying economic activities.
  • Industrial Policies: The government must roll out robust and region-specific industrial policies—not just for the union territory as a whole, but tailored down to the district, tehsil, and block level. A one-size-fits-all approach has repeatedly failed. Each region has unique resources, skill bases, and challenges, and industrial plans must reflect this diversity.
  • Services Sector and Innovation: Jammu and Kashmir has enormous potential in the services sector, especially in IT, tourism, education, and healthcare. Legislators should advocate for technology hubs, skill development centers, and startup ecosystems that can fuel the economy and generate employment.
  • Unemployment and Youth Engagement: The single biggest issue facing the youth of J&K today is unemployment. This is not just an economic issue but a social crisis that demands urgent attention. Industrial incentives, vocational training, and entrepreneurship promotion must be at the heart of the government’s strategy.

A Call for New-Generation Leadership

We must break the cycle of traditional politics that thrives on identity, blame, and out-dated narratives. Jammu and Kashmir needs a new political culture—one rooted in accountability, development, innovation, and transparency.

To bring this change, the youth must not remain spectators. It is imperative for young minds to enter politics, contest elections, join debates, and most importantly, question the status quo.

We need youth who are well-versed in economic policies, data-driven governance, and people-centric planning. We need leaders who are willing to listen more than they speak and act more than they promise.

The Role of Civil Society and Media

Civil society, educators, activists, and media have a significant role to play in this transformation. They must:

  • Highlight constructive debates and criticize disruptive behaviour in assemblies.
  • Educate citizens about development policies and democratic responsibilities.
  • Create platforms for young leaders to share ideas and engage with governance.

Conclusion: Politics of Progress, Not Provocation

The future of Jammu and Kashmir lies not in hollow slogans but in solid solutions. The floor of the assembly must evolve into a forum for transformative ideas and visionary policymaking. Legislators must rise above party lines to deliberate on real issues—employment, economy, education, and equity.

It’s time we demand better from our representatives. It’s time our politics graduates from drama to development. And it’s time the youth take the lead in reshaping the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.
