NRLM helps Kulgam woman build livelihood through Kiryana shop
Kulgam: In a heartening example of empowerment and self-reliance, Nilofar Akhter (32), a resident of Danew village in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, has successfully established a kiryana (grocery) shop in her locality, thanks to the support and guidance provided by the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM).
A mother of two, Nilofar had long aspired to contribute to her family’s income and secure a stable livelihood. Her journey took a transformative turn four years ago when she became associated with the NRLM, a government initiative aimed at empowering rural women through self-help groups and sustainable livelihood options.
“Before joining NRLM, I had no source of income and was completely dependent on my husband. With the support of the mission, I was not only able to gain confidence but also learn basic financial management and entrepreneurship,” said Nilofar.
With the financial support and training provided by NRLM, she was able to open a kiryana shop in her neighborhood, catering to the daily needs of the locals.
Over time, the shop has become a reliable source of income for her family and a symbol of hope for other women in the area.
Nilofar said that with the help of NRLM she has got success in contributing in the livelihood of the family and managing expenses of the family.
She gave credit of her success to Maqsooda and Tahira who have helped her from day one to start her own business.
Rural women shouldn’t remain confined to managing domestic affairs only but they should come out and take benefit of the government schemes to become financially independent.
Locals appreciate Nilofar’s efforts and dedication. “She is an inspiration for other women here. Despite challenges, she has proven that with support and determination, one can achieve economic independence,” said one of her neighbors.
Officials from the NRLM in Kulgam expressed pride in Nilofar’s progress, stating that many more women in the district are being trained and encouraged to start similar ventures to uplift their families and communities.
Nilofar hopes her story will inspire other women in rural areas to step forward, take advantage of such schemes, and work towards building a better future for themselves and their families.
