Pulwama: A 26-year old woman from south Kashmir’s Pulwama district has been earning livelihood for herself and her family with the help of NRLM
Tawheeda Akhter (26) a resident Batgund in Tral Tehsil of Pulwama has been associated with NRLM since 2018.
Akther said that after passing her 10th exam she was sitting idle at her home but then she came to know about SHG groups of NRLM following which she instantly joined it and has been working with it since then.
Tawheeda said that with the help of loans through NRLM, she along with her family have started a ‘Kiryana’ shop followed by a restaurant and a bat shop.
She said that these shops are located in the locality and are run by her along with her brother and she believes that SHG is highly beneficial, especially for women like her.
“I encourage other women who are sitting idle at home and unsure how to start and take a step forward that  this scheme offers great opportunities and with determination any woman can stand on her feet and achieve success,” she said.
She said that NRLM is the best option for women folk to help their families in earning their livelihood especially in rural and far off areas.
“There are hundreds of women in rural areas who are dependent on their family for everything but they must take benefit of the government schemes to become financially independent,” she added.
She said that by joining NRLM, she isn’t earning livelihood for her family but helping others too.
Tawheeda said that joining an SHG is a better option for the women folk as they can continue their work at their home and start small units to become financially independent.
Self-Help Groups have proven to be an effective mechanism for poverty alleviation and women’s empowerment.
Through their collective strength, SHGs have provided access to finance, built livelihood opportunities, and fostered social inclusion for continued success of women.
