Wild animals on prowl in south Kashmir, kill dozens of sheep
Families demand compensation, locals demand capturing of wild beast
Pulwama: The wild animals are on prowl in south Kashmir as they have killed around three dozen sheep and injured a minor in the last 48 hours, locals said Monday.
The locals from Chakoora Pulwama said that a leopard entered into the animal shed of Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat in Chakoora Pulwama and left only after killing at least 26 sheep and injuring many.
They said that Mushtaq who is the father of three daughters was earning his livelihood on the rearing of the sheep.
They along with his relatives said that the leopard has snatched his everything and the government must compensate the victim so that he can restart his work.
In a similar incident a leopard entered into the animal shed of Abdul Rehman Khan and killed at least nine sheep in Watchi Shopian and locals too have demanded compensation for the victim.
Meanwhile, a minor was injured in a leopard attack in Bijbehara area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Sunday evening
An official said that a leopard attacked and injured Yasir Khan son of TaJ Mohammad Khan, aged about 8 years. The boy is a resident of Dadoo Bijbehara.
He said Yasir was evacuated to SDH Bijbehara for treatment where from he was referred to GMC Anantnag for advanced treatment.
Locals said that leopards have been attacking people and even sheep and other animals every year in the area but the wild life department is acting as mute spectators.
They have demanded intervention of MLA Bijbehara and other authorities in this regard.
Meanwhile, an official of the wildlife department said that they have installed multiple cages at all these locations and efforts are on to capture the wild animals.
