Pulwama: The majority of the trees in one of the largest chinar garden in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district are drying up, locals said Friday.
The residents of the Gaang area of Tral said Gaang park holds at least 110 chinar trees.
They said that the majority of the chunar trees in the garden are drying up due to which they are set to lose their heritage trees.
Basharat Ahmad, a local resident said that the Chinar tree, known locally as ‘Bouin’, holds a significant place in Kashmir’s cultural and natural heritage.
He, however, said that the drying up of these chinars is a concern and the government must intervene in this regard.
Manpreet Singh, another local resident said that the Chinar tree has cultural importance but it seems the government is not interested in preserving these trees.
He said that the government must come up with a committee of experts to investigate the reasons behind drying up of these chinar trees.
Locals said that the government must take steps for the preservation of Chinar trees at Gaang at the earliest.
“We are with the government and will co-operate with them for whatever steps they will take,” they said.
They have sought the attention of LG Manoj Sinha and CM Omar Abdullah in this regard.
