SMC says sterilization going on

Srinagar: Stray dogs have wreaked havoc in different areas of Srinagar city, locals alleged Thursday.

People from Gousiya Colony Bemina, KarfaliMohalla, HabbaKadal, Hyderpora and other areas said that the stray dogs have “unleashed a reign of terror” in their areas.  “We are unable to come out of our homes in morning and evening hours. Packs of dogs roam in the streets and threaten the pedestrians,” the callers said.

Gulzar Ahmad from KarfaliMohalla stated that the situation has worsened in recent months, with dogs becoming more aggressive, especially in residential areas.

Many residents fear that the rising stray dog population could lead to more attacks on children and the elderly.

Mohammad Shaban from Gousiya Colony said that there are packs of dogs present in their area and they are feeling insecure.

“Every day we see about two to three dozen dogs, and they are causing disturbances in the night and evening hours,” he said.

When contacted, officials from Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) said the dog menace is on the rise.

“We have initiated sterilization in different areas of Srinagar. We are planning to continue sterilization till March next year,” the officials said. (KNO)
