Srinagar: Transport bodies across Kashmir, including driver, owner unions, and transport associations, have rallied behind Karan Singh Wazir, the newly appointed chairman of the J&K Transport Welfare Association.
Wazir’s visit to Srinagar saw widespread backing from both Kashmir and Jammu divisions, emphasizing unity within the transport sector.
During a joint press conference, transporters expressed concern about prolonged neglect of their demands and highlighted the need for decisive leadership. Wazir assured the fraternity of his commitment to resolving industry challenges, emphasizing his focus on improving working conditions for drivers, cleaners, and owners.
Wazir pointed to the newly installed government under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, expressing hope that the administration, along with the youthful transport minister, would promptly address their concerns.
He promised to carry forward the vision of his late father, TS Wazir, a former legislator and founding chairman of the association, to ensure equitable growth and welfare across the sector.
Amid growing operational difficulties such as rising costs, regulatory pressures, and infrastructural issues, Wazir’s leadership comes at a crucial moment. He called for enhanced coordination between Jammu and Kashmir transport bodies to effectively tackle these challenges. Transport representatives reiterated the need for government intervention to stabilize the industry and support the livelihoods of thousands connected to the trade.
The event underscored the importance of transport as a lifeline for the region’s economy, urging policymakers to address issues ranging from permit regulation to fuel subsidies. Wazir’s inclusive leadership promises to unify fragmented unions and pave the way for better representation of the sector’s interests.
