Locals demand investigation, initiation of restoration works

Pulwama: The residents of Handoora village in Tral area of  south Kashmir’s Pulwama district are consuming contaminated water as authorities have failed to repair a filtration plant that got damaged during 2004.

The residents of Handoora said that the filtration plant in the area was constructed at a cost of around Rs 1 crore in 2002 and it functioned only for two years and since then it is lying defunct.

“The filtration plant of the water supply got defunct in 2005 and since then hundreds of households have been suffering,” they said, adding that authorities have failed to take cognizance of the issue.

They said that there is a need for investigation on what Rs 1 crore was spent in 2002 and why the filtration plant is lying defunct since 2005.

Shabir Ahmad, a local resident said that the scheme is functioning without filtration plants, forcing people to consume contaminated water.

“In the absence of a filtration plant, water from a local water body which is highly contaminated, is directly being supplied to us,” he said.

The locals said that despite bringing the issue continuously into the notice of concerned authorities, nothing has been done so far.

They said that by using contaminated water continuously, there are chances that water borne diseases can break out anytime.

They demanded that matter must be investigated and officers involved in the alleged scam must be taken to task.

They also demanded intervention of DC Pulwama for installing fresh filtration plant there so that locals too can get potable water.
