Ugergund Pulwama residents demand potable water
Pulwama: The residents of Ugergund village of Newa hamlet in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district alleged that their village is not getting proper potable water supply.
Accusing the authorities of ignoring their plights the residents demanded immediate redressal of their genuine grievances.
The residents said that around two decades back the government had sanctioned water supply scheme for the area but it has not been completed even today.
They said that even a bore well was dug and a tank was constructed at the spot but rest of the work was left unfinished.
Manzoor Ahmad, a local resident said that since last twenty years they have been waiting to get water supply but as of now that day hasn’t come.
He added that in absence of potable water, they are forced to consume contaminated water due to which people mainly elderly and children often fall ill.
Shakeel Ahmad, another local said that the government must investigate as to why the scheme was sanctioned and wasn’t completed.
He said that authorities are risking the lives of the people by forcing them to consume contaminated water.
The locals said that some of the households in the village have dug bore wells on their own and even their neighbours have been depending on the water supply from these bore wells.
They said that they have brought the issue into the notice of higher ups several times but to no avail.
They requested the officials to look into the matter at an earliest so that they can heave a sigh of relief.
An official of the Jal Shakti department said that the area is now being covered under Jal Jeewan Mission and it will get potable water facilities.
