Books notorious drug smuggler booked under PIT NDPS Act in Baramulla

Srinagar: Police booked a notorious drug smuggler under PIT NDPS Act in Baramulla besides arrested two drug peddlers in Shopian and Awantipora, a police spokesman said Thursday.

In Baramulla, notorious drug peddler Owais Naseer Sheikh son of Late Naseer Ahmad Sheikh resident of Sangrama Sopore has been booked under PIT-NDPS Act after obtaining formal detention orders from the competent authority, the spokesman said.

The booked drug smuggler has been detained and subsequently lodged in Central Jail Kot-Balwal Jammu, he said.

Pertinently, many cases were registered against him and he was involved in promoting drug abuse trade by supplying drugs to local youth of Sangrama, Delina and Kanispora and other areas of District Baramulla. Despite his involvement in many FIRs, he did not mend his activities and was again involved in promoting drug abuse trade by supplying drugs to local youth.

 

Notably, during the past five (05) months, Police in Baramulla have registered 144 cases under NDPS Act and arrested 194 drug smugglers including 25 most wanted drug smugglers. Besides, booked 23 habitual drug peddlers under PIT-NDPS/PSA. Worth to mention here that contraband substances worth crores have also been recovered/seized in the last five months.

Meanwhile, in Shopian, a police party at a checkpoint established at Arahama arrested a drug smuggler after they intercepted a vehicle (Alto) bearing registration number JK22C-4970. He has been identified as Abid Rashid Wani son of Abdul Rashid Wani resident of Heerpora Shopian. During checking, officers were able to recover 106 grams of contraband charas like substance from the said vehicle.

In Awantipora, acting on specific information, a police party o placed a special Naka at Patalbagh and arrested a drug peddler identified as Adil Maqbool son of Mohammad Maqbool Sheikh resident of Patalbagh Pampore. During the search, 1Kg and 500grams of charas powder was recovered from his possession. It is pertinent to mention the arrest and seizure was done with the assistance of Executive Magistrate Pampore  and Legal metrology Department Pulwama.

All the accused persons have been shifted to respective police stations where they remain in custody. Vehicle used in the commission of crime has also been seized, the spokesman adde.
