Shopian residents demand drainage on Shopian-Bijbehara road
Shopian: The residents of different areas of Shopian on Monday demanded construction of a drainage system on Shopian-Bijbehara road.
They said the construction of Shopian-Bijbehara road was under process and execution of drainage work should be taken up simultaneously.
“If the drain is constructed side by side, it will be better otherwise the road gets damaged when construction of the drain is taken up after macadamisation of the road,” said Shahid Ahmad, a local resident.
He said that the drainage system on the vital road was necessary to avoid accumulation of rain water during inclement weather.
“We have waited for a long time for construction of this road. We can wait for its completion for one year more if a proper drainage system is constructed for it,” he said.
The residents said that the concerned department usually starts construction of a drain on the road after it gets macadamised which in turn damages the macadamised road.
“To avoid damage to the road and save money, it is better to construct the drainage system along with ongoing construction of the road,” said Mubashir Ahmad, a resident of Chitragam.
Locals urged the higher up to look into the matter at an earliest
Notably, Shopian-Bijbehara road connects hundreds of villages with National Highway-44 and Mughal road.
Meanwhile an official said that their first priority was to have better road connectivity.
“The decision about construction of the drainage system will be taken at an appropriate time,” he said.
