MeT predicts timely arrival of monsoon in JK

Srinagar: The mercury shot up for the second consecutive day on Wednesday as nine places in the Valley reeled under intense heat wave while Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded the hottest day of the season at 34 degree Celsius.
According to the data, at least nine areas including Srinagar, Kupwara, Qazigund, Kokernag, Budgam, Anantnag, Pulwama, Bandipora and Baramulla reeled under heat wave.
The maximum temperature in these areas settled above 30 degree Celsius today, the data revealed.
It further stated that Srinagar recorded the hottest day of the season at 34 degree Celsius.
Kupwara recorded 33.5 degree Celsius while Pulwama recorded 33.9 degree Celsius temperature today, the data revealed, adding that the mercury settled at 32.5 degree Celsius in Bandipora and in Baramulla, it settled at 32.3 degree Celsius.
According to an independent weather forecaster, Faizan Arif Keng, the maximum temperature in Kashmir would likely shoot up to 35 degree Celsius by Thursday.
He said that during the next 24 hours, the mercury would rise further in Kashmir and the temperatures could touch 35°C in Srinagar.
“On Friday, there may be a slight respite as maximum temperature will dip by a couple of degrees. Around 2nd July, the rain showers can occur at a few places,” he said, adding that a good monsoon showers are expected in Jammu region during the next couple of days, especially in late night and morning hours.
Meanwhile, a MeT spokesman said that conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance into Jammu and Kashmir over the next 48 hours.
Regarding subsequent five days, he said, light to moderate rain were “very likely” at many places in J&K “mainly in plains of Jammu region.”
Meanwhile, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 21.5°C against 19.0°C on the previous night. The temperature, he said, was 4.3°C above normal during this time of the year for the summer capital.
Qazigund recorded a low of 18.0°C against 15.8°C on the previous night. The temperature was 2.3°C ‘below’ normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.
In Pahalgam, the mercury settled at 14.6°C against 13.2°C on the previous night. The temperature was 3.9°C above normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir during this time of the season, he said.
Kokernag recorded a low of 18.7°C against 17.1°C on the previous night. It was 3.4°C above normal for the place in south Kashmir during this time of the season, the official said.
Gulmarg recorded a low of 13.5°C against 12.0°C on the previous night, the official said. While 11.4°C is normal for the world famous skiing resort during this time of the season, the official said that the temperature was 2.1°C above normal for the famous place in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Kupwara town saw a low of 17.7°C against 16.8°C on the previous night. The temperature was 2.3°C above normal for the district, the official said.
Jammu recorded a low of 31.2°C against 29.9°C on the previous night, the official said.
The temperature was 3.5°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said. Banihal recorded a low of 20.8°C, Batote 21.3°C, Katra 29.0°C while Bhadarwah had a minimum of 20.0°C, the official said. (with input from KNO, GNS)
