Water shortage hits Pulwama village, locals demand potable water

Pulwama: The residents of Teli Mohalla in Rohmoo area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district staged a protest against Jal Shakti department for failing to provide drinking water to them.
Reports said that the locals blocked Pulwama-Rohmoo road and demanded drinking water in the area. They also raised slogans demanding that water supply must be restored immediately.
Protestors, mainly women from the area said that their taps are running dry since last several months and then they are suffering a lot.
“In absence of potable water, we are forced to drink contaminated water which is proving very harmful,” they said.
They said they have been knocking the doors of every official, but to no avail.
“For some days the water supply schme supplying potable water to the area functions normally but it gets defunct very frequently resulting in hardships to the local population,” Shakeel Ahmad, a local resident.
He said that whenever they protest, water supply is restored to the area for sometime but as days pass by the scheme gets defunct again
The locals said that every time they are being assured by officials but on ground assurances prove a failure and the water crisis persists in the area.
Assistant Executive Engineer, Jal Shakti Department Pulwama Bali Singh, when contacted said that due to the drought-like situation for the last two to three months, the water level in the streams has decreased, hence there is shortage of clean drinking water in the area.
He said that every effort was being made by the department to provide clean drinking water to the people and very soon locals will get increased water supply.
He also appealed to the people to use tao water only for drinking purposes and avoid using it for watering their gardens and other purposes.
