Srinagar, May 6: One newly recruited militant has surrender during a gunfight that started in Kenigam village in Shopian district, police said.

“One newly recruited #terrorist namely Tausif Ahmad #surrendered. #Operation in progress. Further details shall follow,” police said in a tweet.

Earlier police said that “Turning down the surrender offer, trapped #terrorists fired and lobbed grenade on joint search party. Further details shall follow”.

Notably, four newly recruited militants were trapped amid a cordon-and-search operation in Kenigam area of Shopian district, officials said on Thursday.

A senior police official said that efforts are underway to make them surrender. “We have brought their families and are trying to persuade them to surrender,” the officer said. He responded in negative to reports about gunfight having started.

Last night, police, army’s 44 Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF had launched a cordoned and search operation in the area amid specific information about the presence of militants.
