Kashmir shines at 12th national icestock championship
Athletes secure international berths
Pulwama: Jammu and Kashmir once again carved its name on the national sporting map as three athletes from the Union Territory delivered an outstanding performance at the 12th National Icestock Championship, held at the snow-clad slopes of Gulmarg, Kashmir.
Representing Lovely Professional University (LPU), the trio bagged multiple medals and secured qualification for the international level, bringing pride to the region.
Parvaiz Ahmad Bhat emerged as one of the top performers of the championship, clinching two silver and two bronze medals with remarkable consistency and skill. His teammate Muzamil Bashir also impressed with a strong showing, winning one silver and three bronze medals, while Mohsin Nazir matched the feat by securing one silver and three bronze medals in different categories.
The trio’s collective performance underlined the growing potential of winter sports athletes from Jammu and Kashmir, especially in disciplines like icestock that demand precision, balance, and endurance in extreme conditions.
Parvaiz Ahmad Bhat said the success was the result of disciplined training and unwavering support from mentors. “Competing at the national level in Gulmarg and earning a place for international competitions is a dream come true. This achievement belongs not just to us, but to everyone who guided and believed in us,” he said.
“We are hopeful that we will be able to perform well in an upcoming event in Germany,” he said
The athletes attributed their success to the dedicated coaching and mentorship of Mohammad Shafi Dar, whose technical guidance played a pivotal role in refining their skills. They also acknowledged the constant encouragement and support extended by Irfan Ahmad and Iqbal Ahmad whose motivation helped the players stay focused throughout their preparation and competition.
Sports enthusiasts and locals in the Valley have hailed the achievement as a significant boost for winter sports in Kashmir, with many calling for greater institutional support and infrastructure to nurture young talent.
The trio now carries the hopes of Jammu and Kashmir and the nation as they prepare to compete on the global stage, further showcasing the region’s immense sporting talent.
