Srinagar: After weeks of a prolonged dry spell that had left many parts of Kashmir gray and quiet, the Valley is now back in its winter glory. A fresh spell of snowfall and rain over the past week has transformed iconic destinations like Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg into frosty wonderlands, drawing tourists from across the country eager to witness Kashmir’s famed winter charm.
At Gulmarg, snow accumulation reached 15–18 inches, covering ski slopes, pine forests, and the meadows in pristine white. Skiers and snowboarders found ideal conditions for winter sports, while families and nature enthusiasts flocked to enjoy gondola rides and panoramic mountain views.
In Pahalgam, around 8–10 inches of snow blanketed the Lidder valley, including Aru and Betaab, creating scenic landscapes ideal for photography, winter trekking, and leisurely walks along snow-dusted trails. Sonamarg, often called the “Meadow of Gold,” witnessed heavy snowfall that enchanted adventure seekers and first-time visitors alike, turning its meadows and riversides into a sparkling winter postcard.
Tourism officials reported a surge in bookings, rising nearly 70% compared to last week, signaling a revival for the Valley’s winter economy. “Snowfall is the lifeblood of our winter tourism,” said an official from the Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Department. “It not only enhances the scenic beauty that travellers come for but also directly supports livelihoods across hotels, taxis, shikara operators, restaurants and small vendors.”
Tour operators corroborated the trend. “This week has been remarkable — bookings are up to 70%,” said a local operator in Gulmarg. “Families, honeymooners, and adventure enthusiasts are all arriving, many extending their stays to enjoy skiing, snow photography, and winter festivals. It’s a welcome revival for the local economy after a slow start to the season.”
Tourists expressed awe at the Valley’s winter transformation. “Seeing Gulmarg covered in fresh snow is magical — it feels like stepping into a postcard,” said a visitor from Delhi. Another visitor at Pahalgam added, “The snow-capped hills, frozen streams, and crisp air make it an unforgettable experience. Every moment here is picture-perfect.”
The snow has also had ecological and environmental benefits. Experts noted that the timely wet spell was crucial not only for tourism but also for sustaining river flows, replenishing groundwater, and maintaining the Valley’s delicate ecosystem.
“This snowfall is vital,” said a climate and water expert in Srinagar. “It replenishes water sources and ensures that rivers and streams maintain flow during winter. Without it, both natural beauty and local livelihoods would have been affected.”
Local residents and small businesses are already feeling the positive impact. Hotels report full or near-full occupancy, shikara operators are back in action, and local markets are bustling with tourists buying handicrafts, woollens, and souvenirs. Street vendors serving hot tea, snacks, and local delicacies say sales have doubled since the snowfall, reflecting a tangible boost in economic activity.
With clear skies, fresh snow, and bustling tourist spots, Kashmir’s winter tourism season is off to a strong start, blending natural beauty with economic revival. From the ski slopes of Gulmarg to the serene valleys of Pahalgam and the adventure trails of Sonamarg, the Valley’s snow‑covered landscapes are once again offering visitors an unforgettable winter experience while breathing new life into local livelihoods.
