Ranipora Anantnag residents demand playground, cite safety risks for children
Anantnag: The residents of Sonach Brah Ranipora in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district have demanded the construction of a playground or mini stadium in their village, saying the absence of basic sports infrastructure has put children’s safety at serious risk and deprived youth of healthy recreational opportunities.
Locals said that despite having a large number of sports-loving children and youth, Sonach Ranipora lacks any designated play area. As a result, children are compelled to play in nearby forest areas and open fields, which exposes them to wild animals, uneven terrain and other potential dangers.
“Our children have no safe place to play. Every day they go towards the forest to play cricket or football, and we remain worried about their safety,” said a local resident. “A playground is not a luxury, it is a necessity for the physical and mental well-being of our children.”
Young athletes from the area echoed similar concerns, stating that the lack of sports facilities has severely affected their talent and prospects. “We have many talented players here, but without a proper ground, we cannot practice regularly or professionally,” said a local football enthusiast. “If a stadium or playground is constructed, it will keep children away from negative activities and help them focus on sports.”
Another youth athlete said that sports not only keep youngsters fit but also instill discipline and teamwork. “Many of us want to pursue sports seriously, but playing in unsafe areas limits our potential. A proper playground will give us confidence and a chance to compete at higher levels,” he added.
Residents further said that neighbouring villages have been provided with sports infrastructure under various government schemes, but Sonach Ranipora continues to remain neglected.
They urged the District Administration, Youth Services and Sports Department, and local representatives to intervene without further delay.
“We appeal to the authorities to visit our village and see the ground reality themselves,” a senior resident said. “Constructing a playground here will safeguard our children, encourage healthy activities and nurture future athletes from this area.”
The locals warned that continued neglect of basic sports infrastructure could have long-term consequences on youth development and safety, and hoped that the administration would take immediate steps to address their long-pending demand.
