Kashmir’s Handicrafts hold immense potential

Just the other day Chief Minister Omar Abdullah unveiled the Handicrafts and Handloom Department’s Calendar-2026, which is being promoted as a visual tribute celebrating the timeless craft traditions of Kashmir.

Handicrafts, especially from Kashmir Valley have been one of the key attractions for tourists and visitors to the valley. The region is renowned for its exquisite handicrafts, reflecting the region’s rich cultural heritage.

From Pashmina Shawls to silk carpets, wood carvings, paper machie, kari embroidery, copperware and much more, these crafts carry forward centuries-old traditions, transforming raw material into masterpieces that reflect the spirit, resilience and rich cultural heritage of the Valley.

Since the potential of the sector is huge, the government is working on enormous and ambitious plans to revive the ages old handicrafts Industry. Not only has the industry started to witness a revival but the people associated with the trade have felt a glimmer of hope as well.

Kashmir’s handicraft industry has seen significant growth in recent years. According to available data, the turnover of handicrafts in Kashmir during the past two years is substantial as Kashmir exported handicraft and handloom products worth 2,567 crore in the last two fiscal years and the first three quarters of the current fiscal year (2024-25).

The export figures touched 3,000 Cr ending March 2025 and the total export value of Kashmiri crafts in four years reached 3,477.31 crore, including exports from key categories like carpets, woolen shawls, paper mache, and other items.

The figures that have come to the fore suggest the immense potential the trade offers for the development of the region and generation of employment here.

Kashmir’s handicrafts however, need a further boost with stress on digital presence. The authorities need to create e-commerce platforms so as to reach global audiences besides, leverage social media platforms for product showcases and storytelling.

Another feature that can be added is stressing on collaboration with influencers and bloggers to promote Kashmir handicrafts. This can help in a big way as today markets are driven by social media influencers who involve markets players besides buyers.

Handicrafts promotion has already been done through various craft fairs and exhibitions and these too have been quite influencing to organize and participate crowds in national and international craft fairs.

Traction for Kashmir Handicrafts can further be generated through India International Trade Fair, World Crafts Council and showcasing handicrafts in luxury stores and galleries.
