Srinagar: Kashmir’s famed winter destinations, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, are all set to usher in 2026 on a hopeful note as tourist bookings witness a significant rise ahead of New Year celebrations. Fresh snowfall has draped these resorts in pristine white, reviving the Valley’s postcard charm and drawing visitors eager to experience a white New Year.
Gulmarg, with its snow-laden meadows and bustling ski slopes, is witnessing a steady flow of tourists, particularly adventure enthusiasts and families. Hoteliers say enquiries and confirmations have surged over the past week, pushing occupancies to healthy levels.
“Snow has changed the mood completely,” said a hotelier in Gulmarg. “People are calling specifically for skiing, gondola rides and New Year packages. The festive weekend is almost fully booked.”
In Pahalgam, the atmosphere is quieter but equally enchanting. The Lidder River, flanked by snow-covered banks, and the frozen stretches of Aru and Betaab valleys have made the town a preferred choice for honeymooners and families seeking a peaceful celebration. Tour operators note that bookings in Pahalgam have nearly doubled compared to early December. “Tourists want calm, scenic surroundings and quality time in the snow, and Pahalgam offers exactly that,” a tour operator said.
Travel stakeholders attribute the surge to a combination of factors, including improved connectivity, sustained promotional efforts and a gradual return of traveller confidence. Winter festivals, cultural evenings and curated New Year events across hotels have further added to the appeal.
Local businesses, including taxi operators, shikara owners and small shopkeepers, are also feeling the impact of the tourist rush, bringing much-needed relief during the winter lean season. Authorities, meanwhile, have stepped up arrangements to ensure smooth traffic movement, safety and tourist assistance during the festive period.
As the countdown to the New Year begins, snow-draped Gulmarg and Pahalgam stand as symbols of renewal—offering visitors not just celebrations, but a serene winter escape and the promise of brighter days for Kashmir’s tourism sector.
