Sopore: Government Boys Higher Secondary School (GBHSS) Sopore on Monday celebrated National Mathematics Day with great enthusiasm and academic fervour, highlighting the importance of mathematics in education and everyday life.
The event was graced by MLA Sopore, Irshad Rasool Kar, and Joint Director Education, North Kashmir, Hakeem Tanveer , who attended the programme as chief guests. The celebration witnessed active participation from teachers, students, mathematicians, and members of civil society.
On the occasion, Principal GBHSS Sopore and senior Mathematics Lecturer, G.N Sumji, along with other mathematics lecturers, welcomed the guests and highlighted the objective of observing National Mathematics Day, which commemorates the birth anniversary of the legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
Several speakers, especially mathematicians, spoke at length about the significance of mathematics as a core subject that forms the backbone of science, technology, and logical thinking. They emphasized that mathematics is not merely about numbers but a discipline that sharpens reasoning, problem-solving skills, and analytical ability.
Joint Director Education North Kashmir, Hakeem Tanveer, stressed the need to develop interest in mathematics at the primary level. He said that students’ fear of mathematics can be overcome through innovative teaching methods and collective efforts by teachers, parents, and educational institutions. He urged educators to make the subject more engaging and concept-based rather than exam-oriented.
In his address, Principal Mr G.N Sumji, who is himself a mathematician, said that there exists a widespread phobia about mathematics, particularly among students in Jammu and Kashmir. He asserted that mathematics is often perceived as a tough subject, whereas in reality it is a key and highly interesting discipline. “Without mathematics, no subject is complete. It plays a vital role in all fields of knowledge,” he said, adding that parents and students must be sensitized about the importance and practical relevance of mathematics in daily life.
MLA Sopore, Irshad Rasool Kar, lauded the efforts of the school administration and teaching fraternity for organizing such an awareness-oriented programme. He encouraged students to overcome fear and adopt a positive approach towards mathematics, assuring continued support for educational initiatives in the constituency.
The programme concluded with a renewed resolve to promote mathematical learning, reduce subject-related anxiety among students, and foster a culture of curiosity and excellence in academics.
