Athletes call it a motivating platform, officials stress role of sports in discipline and drug-de-addiction

Shopian: The Chitragam block of south Kashmir’s Shopian district witnessed an energetic display of sportsmanship as MY Bharat Youth on Monday organised a block-level sports event featuring dozens of young athletes from various villages.
Participants competed in volleyball, badminton, races, and other athletic categories, turning the local sports ground into a centre of enthusiasm and healthy competition.
The event was attended by Deputy Director MY Bharat Youth Volunteer, Pradeep Kumar, and SI Jahangeer Ahmad, who appreciated the district’s growing interest in sports.
Speaking to athletes, Pradeep Kumar highlighted the far-reaching benefits of active participation in sports.
“Sports teach us discipline, teamwork, and the ability to handle success and failure with grace. If you stay consistent in such activities, it will shape your personality and open new opportunities,” he told the gathering.
He added that MY Bharat aims to bring youth from every block into organised sports platforms so they can channel their energy in productive directions.
SI Jahangeer Ahmad, while interacting with participants, underscored the role of sports in keeping youth away from negative influences.
“Sports are one of the strongest tools in curbing drug addiction. When our youngsters stay engaged in physical activity, they automatically stay away from bad habits,” he said.
The young athletes also expressed excitement and appreciation for the event.
Aamir Ahmad, one of the volleyball players, said: “We rarely get such well-organised tournaments in our area. Events like this motivate us to train harder and dream bigger.”
Another participant, Shabir Hussain, who won a medal in the 200-metre race, said “Competing with athletes from nearby villages boosts our confidence. We want these events to be held more frequently.”
At the conclusion of the programme, trophies and medals were distributed among the winners and participants, with officials encouraging the youth to continue pursuing sports actively.
Locals and athletes alike hailed the initiative, hoping it becomes a regular feature across the district to harness the sporting potential of rural youth.
