Srinagar: Police in close coordination with the Geology & Mining Department and other concerned agencies, launched a coordinated crackdown on illegal mining activities in the river Jhelum in Sopore, a police spokesman said Monday.
He said that during the enforcement drive, Police seized four tractors and two tippers involved in the illegal extraction of sand and other minor minerals from the river at Seer. The illegal mining had caused damage to the river embankment and posed a potential threat to nearby public infrastructure.
The action is aimed at curbing unauthorised extraction of natural resources, safeguarding the environment, and protecting public property. Police teams have intensified surveillance at vulnerable points along the river and are maintaining strict vigil in coordination with revenue, mining and irrigation authorities, the spokesman added.
