Locals express anger, question authorities over non-functional facility

Shopian: A newly inaugurated public toilet block in Shopian district has sparked public outrage after locals discovered it locked and lying unused just days after its formal opening.
The facility, constructed to improve sanitation in the busy market area, was expected to ease hardships for pedestrians, commuters, and traders, but its closure has left residents questioning the purpose of such projects.
According to locals, the toilet block was inaugurated with much publicity by the concerned authorities earlier this month. However, instead of serving the community, it has remained inaccessible ever since.
“The authorities held a big event on the day of inauguration, but after that, the toilet has been locked every single day. What was the point of spending public money if people can’t use it?” said Bilal Ahmad, a shopkeeper in the area.
Residents allege that the department responsible for maintenance has failed to deploy staff to keep the facility operational. Many complain that despite repeated assurances by officials that amenities will be improved, the reality on the ground remains unchanged.
“Women, elderly people, and even school children face difficulties here because there is no functional public toilet. We had hoped this new block would solve the issue, but it has turned out to be just another photo-op for officials,” said Shakeela Bano, a local resident.
The locals also pointed out that the market area witnesses a high footfall throughout the day, making the need for such a facility urgent and essential.
“This is a busy area. If authorities cannot even ensure a toilet remains open, it shows their lack of seriousness. Either make it functional or explain why it has been kept locked,” said Adil Bashir, a college student.
Residents have urged the district administration to immediately look into the matter and ensure the toilet block is opened and properly maintained. They also called for accountability from officers responsible for public amenities.
Meanwhile, an official from the concerned department, when contacted, said the matter would be examined. “We will check why the facility has remained closed and take necessary action at the earliest,” the official assured.
He said that there were some issues with contractor but that has been resolved already.
