Discovery near Kareeva Hill sparks archaeological interest in Newa area

Pulwama: A routine road-widening project in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district has turned into a remarkable archaeological revelation after ancient relics — including what appear to be human skeletal remains — were unearthed near Kareeva Hill in the Newa area.
The unexpected discovery has sparked curiosity and excitement among locals and authorities alike, with experts from the Archaeological Department set to examine the findings in the coming days.
According to locals, workers engaged in road expansion along the Kareeva Hill stretch stumbled upon bones and other relic-like objects buried beneath layers of soil.
The labourers immediately stopped the work and informed the concerned authorities, suspecting the site could hold historical or archaeological importance.
“We were digging for road widening when the JCB hit something hard. On closer inspection, we found bones and pottery fragments. It was something we had never seen before,” said Bashir Ahmad, a local resident of Newa, recalling the moment of discovery.
Soon after the incident, officials from the district administration and police reached the spot to secure the area and prevent tampering with the possible archaeological evidence.
An official from the Department of Archives, Archaeology, and Museums J&K said that a team will soon visit the site to study the nature and origin of the relics.
“Preliminary reports suggest that the remains may date back several centuries, but only a detailed examination can confirm their age and cultural context,” the official said.
