Officials cite local objections as reason for project delay

Shopian: The residents of Thokar Mohalla in Shadab Karewa, located around eight kilometers from south Kashmir’s Shopian town, continue to face immense hardships due to the poor condition of the road leading to their locality, locals alleged Friday.

They said that despite repeated pleas to the authorities, the road has not been properly developed for years, forcing residents to walk on a rough, uneven surface filled with potholes and mud.
“The road is in such a bad shape that even walking becomes difficult, especially during rains. Patients, students, and elderly people suffer the most,” said Abdul Rashid, a local resident.
Another villager, Manzoor Ahmad, said that the lack of a proper road has made life miserable. “Ambulances and vehicles often get stuck here. We feel cut off from the rest of the area. It is unfortunate that in this modern age, we still have to deal with such basic issues,” he said.
Residents said they have approached the concerned authorities multiple times, but no concrete action has been taken so far. “We have raised this issue before officials several times, yet the condition remains unchanged. Our requests have only been met with assurances,” said Ghulam Nabi, another local.
Officials from the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department said that the government has already taken up the matter, but some issues have delayed the work.
“The department has attempted to start work on the road several times, but certain local objections have hindered the progress. We are trying to resolve the matter amicably so that the project can be completed at the earliest,” an official said.
