Fresh rain, snow prediction triggers concern among fruit growers
Experts warn of possible damage if snowfall hits upper reaches, urge caution and monitoring
Shopian: The prediction for rains and snow is sparking deep concern among local fruit growers who fear potential damage to the region’s apple crop, which is currently being harvested.
Growers said that the timing of the predicted rainfall is worrisome as the apple-picking season is at its peak in Shopian district.
They said that if the weather forecast proves correct and snowfall occurs in the higher reaches, it could spell further disaster for this year’s yield.
“Rain at this stage can affect the color and quality of apples, while snowfall in upper areas would be devastating. We are already facing market challenges and other issues, and a weather shock now would worsen the situation,” said Abdul Rashid, an orchardist from Shopian.
Another grower said that many farmers have yet to complete harvesting, and any prolonged wet spell could make transportation and packaging difficult.
“We hope the weather stabilizes soon. Even a few centimetres of snow in higher belts can damage trees that are still laden with fruit,” he added.
Meanwhile, experts have advised farmers to stay alert and take preventive measures to minimize potential losses.
“Farmers should keep monitoring weather updates and avoid unnecessary delays in harvesting. Those in higher altitudes should secure their orchards and ensure safe storage of picked produce,” a horticulture expert said.
The Meteorological Department has predicted intermittent light to moderate rainfall across Kashmir with the possibility of snowfall in higher reaches over the next few days.
Apple growers continue to remain anxious, hoping that the forecasted snowfall does not turn into a repeat of previous years when untimely weather events caused widespread damage to Kashmir’s prized apple industry.
They said this year they have already suffered heavy damages and they cannot bear the further damage.
