Police intensifies fight against drug menace in Sopore
Calls for collective social responsibility
Sopore: Police on Wednesday organised a drug awareness program that saw enthusiastic participation from students, teachers, and religious scholars of the area. The event aimed to educate the community, especially the youth, about the dangers of narcotics and the shared responsibility in tackling this grave challenge.
Speaking on the occasion, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sopore, Iftkhar Talib, stressed that curbing the drug menace cannot be left to the police alone.
“It is our collective duty—including parents, teachers, and responsible citizens—to save our youth from this scourge,” he said.
The SSP underlined that the police have been making sustained efforts to break the drug supply chain with no space left for traffickers. He acknowledged, however, that despite daily raids and multiple arrests, the fight against narcotics continues to remain a pressing challenge.
“We are taking action against drug peddling every day. Multiple cases have been registered, and in recent weeks, seven to eight peddlers have been arrested. Yet, it would not be correct to say that the issue of drugs in Sopore has reduced or improved,” SSP Talib told reporters.
He added that the police are working on a dual strategy of enforcement and rehabilitation. While law enforcement agencies focus on cutting the supply chain and choking sources of trafficking, equal emphasis will be placed on guiding and rehabilitating those who have fallen prey to addiction.
The SSP further revealed that plans are underway to establish a fully functional drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centre in Sopore, which will provide much-needed support to affected individuals and their families.
The initiative was widely welcomed by participants, with teachers and religious scholars pledging to spread the message within schools, mosques, and the community at large. Students also expressed their resolve to stand against drugs and to help their peers resist addiction.
With both preventive and corrective measures in motion, Sopore Police emphasized that only through community partnership, awareness, and strong enforcement can the menace of drugs be rooted out from society.
