Persistent water leakage, risking lives and property: Nownagri Pulwama Residents
Pulwama: The residents of Nownagri village in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district continue to face severe hardships due to persistent water leakage from a damaged tank on the Karewa hilltop, which has been causing erosion, landslides, and a dangerously slippery road surface for months.
Locals allege that despite repeated complaints, the administration has failed to take any meaningful action to address the issue, which they say is now posing a serious threat to lives and property.
“A water tank constructed on the Karewa has been leaking for over a year. Initially, the leakage was minor, but over the past few months, the flow has intensified significantly,” said Nazir Ahmad, a local resident.
“The water flows directly onto the main road, turning it into a slippery hazard and leading to frequent accidents,” he added.
Bilal Ahmad, another local, echoed the concern, saying, “Several people have been injured in the last two years at this very spot. If steps are not taken immediately, the road connecting dozens of villages could collapse.”
The leaking water has not only triggered multiple landslides in the area but has also put homes and farmlands situated along the road at risk. Locals say they live in constant fear of their houses caving in due to ongoing erosion.
Shahid Ahmad, a resident of the affected area, urged immediate intervention: “The government must act now. Delaying action could result in a major tragedy. We appeal to the Deputy Commissioner of Pulwama and other relevant departments to personally visit the site and ensure the leakage is repaired, and the land is stabilized.”
Despite raising the matter several times with officials, residents allege that no concrete steps have been taken so far, forcing them to protest and block the Pulwama-Chakoora road several times.
The residents are demanding a comprehensive technical assessment of the leakage and a permanent engineering solution to prevent further damage.
