Bijbehara residents demand safe potable water supply
Allege contaminated water being supplied
Bijbehara: The residents of Teeli Mohalla in south Kashmir’s Bijbehara town have raised serious concerns over the supply of contaminated water in their locality, saying the water being provided is unfit for consumption and poses a grave risk to public health.
Locals said that despite repeated pleas to the authorities, the issue remains unresolved.
“The water we receive is muddy and smells foul. It is clearly contaminated and can lead to the outbreak of waterborne diseases,” said Mohammad Yousuf, a resident.
He added that people in the area have no choice but to either boil the water or buy bottled water, which is not feasible for many households on a daily basis.
Another local, Naseema Bano, said, “We are forced to give this water to our children despite knowing it is not safe. Several people have already reported stomach-related illnesses in the locality.”
The residents appealed to the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and local MLA Bashir Ahmad Veeri to personally intervene in the matter and ensure the provision of safe drinking water to Teeli Mohalla without further delay.
“Our repeated complaints to the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department have yielded no result. We are left with no option but to take to the streets if our demands are not met,” said Ghulam Nabi, another resident.
The aggrieved residents urged the administration to immediately test the water being supplied and take corrective measures to restore clean and safe water supply to the locality.
