Shopian: The residents of Darbagh Watchi area in Zainapora subdivision of South Kashmir’s Shopian district have appealed to the authorities for the construction of a much-needed bridge over Nallah Tongri—a key connectivity point that has remained in a dilapidated state since the 2014 floods.
Locals said the existing structure, damaged during the devastating floods over a decade ago, continues to pose a serious risk. While light motor vehicles can still pass with caution, the bridge is too unstable for heavy vehicles, causing immense inconvenience to residents, especially in times of emergencies.
“We are facing a lot of problems due to the absence of a safe bridge, especially during medical emergencies and when transporting essential goods,” said Gulzar Ahmad, a resident of Darbagh.
“The bridge is tilted to one side, and its use is extremely risky. If the government doesn’t act soon, it could lead to a major accident.”
The residents allege that despite repeated representations and appeals to concerned authorities, the issue has been ignored. “The government has spent lakhs on various projects in other areas, but somehow our genuine demand for a bridge has not been fulfilled,” said Nisar Ahmad, another local.
They added that the construction of a proper concrete bridge would not only ensure safety but also improve connectivity with neighbouring villages and provide access to healthcare, education, and markets—critical services for the residents of the area.
“We’ve knocked on every door—government offices, grievance redressal camps, and election rallies—but we’ve only received empty assurances,” the locals said.
“It is not just about infrastructure. It is about safety, dignity, and equal development,” said a resident, stressing that the demand is not new but an overdue necessity.
The residents appealed for urgent action to end their long-standing hardship and bring long-awaited relief to hundreds of households in the area.
The residents have sought the intervention of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister, local MLA Showkat Hussain Ganaie, and Deputy Commissioner Shopian.
They urged the administration to initiate construction work on a new concrete bridge without further delay.
