Shukroo Keller: A Hidden gem in Shopian awaiting government attention
Shopian: Tucked away in the picturesque landscapes of south Kashmir’s Shopian district, the scenic site of Shukroo Keller remains one of the region’s most breathe taking but overlooked tourist destinations.
Despite its rich natural beauty and promising potential, the area continues to suffer due to lack of basic infrastructure and government support.
Shikroo, nestled within the Keller block, boasts expansive meadows, dense forests, and close proximity to the historic Mughal Road.
These features position it as an ideal spot for tourism and eco-adventure activities. However, the absence of essential facilities has stunted its growth as a tourism hotspot.
Local residents express frustration over years of official neglect.
“We’ve heard repeated promises from the government about bringing this area on the tourism map, but nothing has changed on the ground,” said Aadil Ahmad, a local resident.
“We belong to economically weaker sections. Developing tourism here would not only uplift the area but also provide much-needed livelihood opportunities to locals.” He said.
While trekkers and nature lovers from nearby districts occasionally visit the area, non-local tourist footfall remains minimal.
Javid Ahmad, another resident, attributes this to the lack of basic amenities.
“People come here for day trips, but they are disappointed when they find no arrangements for drinking water, electricity, or accommodation. This discourages longer stays.”
He emphasized the need for setting up campsites, guest houses, water points, and lighting to make the area more tourist-friendly. “With such stunning beauty around, it’s painful to see the place being ignored.”
The locals said they have repeatedly raised the issue with the concerned authorities, urging them to take concrete measures to promote the region. However, their pleas have fallen on deaf ears so far.
The residents appeal to the government to prioritize Shukroo Keller’s development, ensuring that this hidden gem finally gets the recognition and facilities it truly deserves.
