Kathohalan residents demand construction of bridge, fencing at local primary school
Shopian: The residents of Kathohalan village in the Keller subdivision of south Kashmir’s Shopian district have reiterated their longstanding demand for the construction of a concrete bridge over a local nallah, highlighting the daily hardships faced due to its absence.
In addition, they are seeking fencing and a bathroom for the local Government Primary School.
Local residents said that around 20 households are situated on the far side of the nallah and are compelled to cross the water body using temporary makeshift arrangements.
These makeshift structures are often washed away during seasonal floods, cutting off access to schools, healthcare and essential services.
“Our children have to cross this nallah daily to reach school. The lack of a proper bridge puts their lives at risk, especially during rains or when the water level rises,” said Irshad Ahmad Shah, a local resident.
Residents revealed that at least two individuals have tragically lost their lives while attempting to cross the nallah, and several others have sustained injuries over the years.
“Despite these incidents, the administration has failed to take any concrete action. We feel neglected,” Ahmad added.
Locals also lamented that while the government has spent lakhs on various development works across the region, their repeated pleas for a bridge have fallen on deaf ears.
“We have approached every concerned authority. We have participated in elections, government outreach programs, and shown faith in the system. But the repeated assurances have turned out to be hollow promises,” said another local.
In addition to the bridge, the residents demanded that the local Government Primary School be fenced and provided with basic facilities like a bathroom. “Children, especially girls, face inconvenience due to the lack of a toilet. Moreover, the school premises need fencing for the safety of students,” the residents said.
The villagers have now pinned their hopes on CM Omar Abdullah, MLA Adv Shabir Ahmad Kullay and Deputy Commissioner Shopian to intervene and ensure that their grievances are addressed without further delay.
“We urge the authorities to take immediate steps to construct a bridge over the nallah and provide necessary infrastructure at the school so that the residents, especially children, can live and study in dignity and safety,” they said.
