Police arrests two impersonators for extorting money in Awantipora
Srinagar: Police in Awantipora have arrested two individuals who were posing as being closely connected to authorities and extorting money from the public, a police spokesman said Thursday.
The arrests came after a complaint was lodged by Mushtaq Ahmad Dar, son of Ghulam Rasool Dar, a resident of Naristan, who reported that the accused were fraudulently presenting themselves as close of the police and demanding money under false promises.
The accused have been identified as Jaliya Parveen, daughter of Mohammad Amin Rather, a resident of Monghal, Anantnag, and Bilal Ahmad Rah, son of Ghulam Ahmad Rah, a resident of Chanapora, Srinagar. They allegedly targeted suspects called for questioning, exploiting fear of legal action to extract payments, the spokesman said.
Their illegal activities surfaced after multiple victims came forward, reporting coercion and threats. Acting promptly on the complaint, Police registered FIR No. 62/2025 under relevant sections of the law. Both accused have been taken into custody, the spokesman added.
