Pulwama: The residents across several villages in Pulwama district are urgently calling on authorities to clean and restore irrigation canals ahead of the agricultural season.
Villagers from villages like Wakharwan, Reshipora, Shaar, Galandar, Hasanwuni, Rakh, Litter, Zahid Bagh and others areas said that they have been experiencing severe water shortages due to defunct or blocked irrigation systems.
They, however, said that if the cleaning process of these canals will be taken up before the season starts then people won’t face problems during the upcoming agricultural season.
Gulzar Ahmad, a resident of Rakh Pulwama said that irrigation department usually takes up the cleaning process during the peak season due to which people face lot of issues.
He said that authorities should take up the cleaning process now so that people won’t suffer during the peak agricultural season.
Javid Ahmad Reshie, another resident said that if cleaning process will be taken up before the season the canals will be cleaned in a better way.
He said that canals are being cleaned during the peak season but that time these canals don’t get cleaned properly.
The locals said that they have been requesting the government to take up the cleaning process before the season starts every year but that isn’t being done due to which farmers are facing losses due to delay in paddy sapling plantation.
The residents of these Pulwama villages are once again urging the administration to prioritize the cleaning and maintenance of irrigation canals to prevent agricultural losses and to safeguard the livelihoods of villagers.
