Pahalgam attack: 48 tourist sites in Kashmir shut amid security concerns

Officials deny closure, say all major destinations are open
Srinagar: Nearly 50 public parks and gardens located in vulnerable areas of Kashmir valley have been shut as a precautionary measure in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, officials said on Tuesday.
Gates have been closed at 48 of the 87 public parks and gardens in Kashmir in view of the threat perception to tourists, they said.
They said the security review was an ongoing process and more locations may be added to the list in the coming days.
The officials said the tourist locations which have been closed are in far-flung areas of Kashmir and include some of the new destinations thrown open over the past 10 years.
The spots put off limit for the tourists include Dooshpathri, Kokernag, Duksum, Sinthan Top, Acchabal, Bangus valley, Margan Top and Tosamaidan.
Although the authorities have not issued a formal order to this effect, the entry to these places has been blocked.
In case of several Mughal Gardens in south Kashmir, the doors to these spots have been locked.
The decision to shut down the tourist locations comes a week after terrorists shot dead 26 persons — mostly tourists — at Baisaran meadows in Pahalgam resort.
Meanwhile, authorities confirmed that all major tourist destinations across Kashmir, including Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Dal Lake, and the Mughal Gardens, remain fully operational and continue to welcome visitors.
A senior official in Tourism department said that the tourist activity remains unaffected at key locations, which are witnessing a steady influx of visitors. “Destinations like Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and other prominent sites are open and secure.
Tourists are moving freely, and all necessary security arrangements are in place to ensure their safety and comfort,” the official said.
He clarified that only some lesser-known offbeat destinations—accounting for merely 4-5% of the overall tourist footfall—has been closed temporarily as a precautionary measure.
“There is no restriction on visiting any of the primary tourist circuits. Tourists are being warmly welcomed, and the local communities, along with administration and tourism stakeholders, are fully facilitating their stay,” the official added.
The statement comes amid concerns following a recent isolated incident near Pahalgam.
Officials emphasized that the situation is under control, and there is no cause for an alarm. (with inputs from PTI/KNO)
