Pulwama:  The residents of the Abhama hamlet in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district have urged the Jammu and Kashmir administration to bring the scenic spot of Shidak onto the official tourism map for the upliftment of the area.
Known for its natural beauty and tranquil surroundings, Shidak has long remained unexplored despite its potential to attract nature lovers and adventure seekers.
Locals said that lush green meadows, dense forests, and crystal-clear streams of Shidak can easily rival popular tourist destinations in the Valley.
However, a lack of infrastructure, road connectivity and promotional efforts has kept it under the radar, they said.
“Shidak has everything needed to become a prime tourist destination. If the government promotes it and provides basic facilities, it will benefit not only tourists but also boost the local economy,” said Yawar, a resident of Abhama.
He said that this place isn’t in any way less than Pahalgam, Gulmarg and other prime tourist spots but it needs to be developed.
Locals said that they have requested authorities several times to bring this spot on the tourism map as people of the area are financially weak and promotion of this spot can help them in getting out of poverty.
They appealed to the Lieutenant Governor, Omar Abdullah lead  administration and the Tourism Department to conduct an official survey and begin developmental work to make Shidak accessible and tourist-friendly.
They believe that eco-tourism projects and homestay initiatives could transform the area, offering employment opportunities to youth and preserving the environment.
The demand comes at a time when the government is pushing to diversify tourism across lesser-known areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
Locals hope that their pleas will be heard, and Shidak will soon find its rightful place on the tourism map of the region.
Meanwhile, an official said that a project for providing road connectivity to Shidak has been taken up as without road connectivity development isn’t possible.
He said that after road connectivity, tourists can visit there and other steps for the development of this area will be taken up after construction of the road.
